Pizza

Members of Operative Lodge #308 in Polk City made almost 300 pizza's for the fall pizza fundraiser. Over a dozen brothers helped make the pizzas Saturday morning and even a couple of ladies helped out, too!

The Lodge uses the proceeds from the sale to fund their scholarship program. In addition, North Polk elementary music students earned money for each pizza they sold.

Operative Lodge #308 holds its semi-annual Pizza Sale this weekend. Proceeds from the sale go to help fund the Lodge scholarship program. Each year, the Polk City Lodge awards a scholarship to a graduating senior of the North Polk School District.

AP Government and Politics: US

Last week I discovered I had inadvertently published a post here that was meant for the high school class I teach. My high school government class blog uses Blogger, as does Iowa Freemasonry, and I had forgotten to sign out of the Iowa Freemasonry account so the post about federalism, the bureaucracy and congressional oversight, or some other topic current presidential candidates probably wouldn't understand wound up here. I use it to post assignments, links to articles and political events, and anything that will help them score higher on the Advanced Placement test. I wonder...how would the current folks running for president fare on the AP test...

Back to school

The school year has started and that means back to work for me. I teach American Government at the high school level. I also teach an Advanced Placement Government and Politics class for which students can earn college credit.

I used to teach, and coach, high school debate, but I resigned that position last year. I’m sure I’ll miss debate, in fact, I do already. Each year brought a new debate topic to study and I enjoyed learning about them. I’ll miss working with the debaters, too; that was the best part of the job. Most people would be surprised how competitive high school debate is and how hard debaters work in the summer and during the school year.

Yesterday was the anniversary of the first Lincoln-Douglas debate in Ottawa, IL in 1858.
